The Veg Plot

Every little helps

We recently noticed some bark damage to our young apple trees. We hadn’t staked them as a bit of wind assisted movement helps the young tree grow stronger roots, but the recent severe winds have caused the trees to bend over and rub on the chicken wire that was supposedly to protect them from the local rabbit population.

Our quick fix was to shove in a cane a couple of inches from the tree and attach it to the saplings using a Tesco bag. String would have cut into the bark, making things worse, and as you can see from the picture above, the white and blue bag really does set the tree off nicely.
