Our newly planted cider apple trees have taken to our patch like, er, trees to soil. We dug them in early March, making sure we gave them plenty of water during the first week or so (one bucket full each, every night for two weeks).
We purchased our Maiden whips from Ashridge Nurseries, and were mightily impressed with their service. Four good, healthy bare root plants, delivered next working day, just like they promised.
After a chat with a tree expert at the Bath & West show (inbetween visits to the cider tent) he told us to take off the blossom or small fruit in the first couple of years of the trees life to channel the plant energy into root growing.
So we did just that.
